1. Software Developers
Software engineers work on the design, development, maintenance and evaluation of computer software and systems. Depending on the company, software engineers’ duties can range from developing new applications and project planning, to upgrading existing software and providing security support. Scot Melland, CEO of Dice Holdings, parent of IT jobs website Dice.com, concurs that software developers are the most sought-after technology workers and notes that they have one of the lowest unemployment rates around – just 1.8%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Lucille Mayer, CIO at BNY Mellon, also expects that the need for developers will rise. It’s never too late learn computer programming!

2. Web Developer
Web developers are programmers who specialize in Internet and browser applications and can also focus on the design and workings of a website. Even right now, your whole experience as you look at a website’s color scheme, layout, and images is all thanks to a web developer.

3. Network Systems Analyst / Network Engineer
Depending on the company, these two roles can either be separate or one in the same. Network systems analysts monitor the efficiency of a company’s network systems – including local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs), Internet and Intranet – and set up networks as needed. Certain companies label this same position as network engineer, while others hire network engineers to configure infrastructures from scratch, designing and implementing the plans to set up a new network.

4. Mobile Developer
Mobile developers work on the design, back-end and creation of mobile apps, and depending on the company, it can include entertainment, information, communication and more. Especially with technology growing at such a fast pace, over 56% of adults have a smartphone and what would be a smart phone without apps?!

5. Database Administrator
In order to extract valuable information from a ton of data about customers and users, companies need tech experts to collect and analyze it. That’s the database administrator’s job; he or she stores, organizes and manages data in line with the company’s goals. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 31% employment growth for database administrators between 2010 and 2020, which is much faster than the average job.

6. IT Manager
IT Managers’ jobs will vary by company – they can either be in charge of internal IT operations or focus more on strategy for client-tailored, technology-based solutions. IT managers guide companies to match modern technology to their business structure, needs and goals.  These managers coordinate technology-related matters with top executives, planning upgrades of existing software or hardware and negotiating with vendors for the service of current products or the purchase of new ones so with all of their responsibilities, it is no wonder why it’s a hot tech job!

7. Information Security Analyst
These analysts focus on risk assessment, vulnerability assessment and defense planning to prevent company or government data from being breached because there are many hackers and data breaches. Without these guys, company data and systems wouldn’t be safe and secure!

8. Mechanical Engineer
Mechanical engineers use research, design, building and testing skills to produce and test safe and quality machine-driven products and those products can be in many fields. They can range from architecture, alternative energies, re-manufacturing and nanotechnology so mechanical engineers have a lot of opportunity in where they would like to work. Computers are also important for tweaking a design and gauging how it will function so technology is very important.

9. Quality assurance (QA) professionals and business analysts
With more money being put into IT projects, many companies are focusing on quality control and assembling more accurate project requirements. QA professionals relieve stress off of developers so they can focus on coding, while business analysts can help build trust among stakeholders and serve as go-betweens for technology and business.

10. Chief Digital officer
ZDNet recently reported that the position of chief digital officer will be Asia’s hottest senior tech job in 2014. The position is gathering steam stateside as well, and for the same reason: the move toward big data, cloud services and cyber-security. As companies are going digital, CDOs are responsible for the adoption of digital technologies across a business.

Obama’s EMR Initiative

With information technology on the rise, President Obama is trying to ensure that all medical records in the United States get converted to an electronic format. Even without the help of President Obama, the use of EMR is progressing from the majority of physicians, health care organizations, and related business associates because of the ease and rise in information technology. As part of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the United States government has pushed for the use of EMR. The electronic medical records mandate is formally known as the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) and the legislation outlines incentives, penalties, and eventual mandatory implementation of EMR systems in the health care industry.

The use of electronic medical records can make physicians’ offices more efficient and improve the quality of patient care by making their medical history available to any physician treating them. There are many government grant incentives & government penalties. For example, grants totaling $598 million will establish approximately 70 Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers. Physicians that do not implement EMR systems by the 2015 deadline will get their Medicare reimbursements reduced by 1%, and each subsequent year the rate reportedly will increase by 1% or more.

The government is serious in terms of ensuring that the conversion rate to EMR technology rises. It is likely that more college-level programs aimed at creating more Health Information Management professionals will be introduced. With the increased number of EMR initiatives, there will be more job opportunities available for professionals to implements the new systems.
